Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A SAVING of I per cent. in fuel costs 1-1. represents £50,000 a year with a fleet of about 8,000 vehicles. Mr. A. T. Wilford, B.Sc., director of research of the London Transport Executive, made . this point when he gave a lecture to the

• social club of C.A.V., Ltd., London, W.3.

Mr, Wilford mentioned the effect of using lubricants of lower viscosity than normal. A change from oil of S.A.E. 30 to ,S416.E. 20W resulted in a 4 per cent. fuel saving in winter and 3 per cent. in • summer, with no increase in engine wear or maintenance costs.

The use of solvent refined oils had greatly reduced the amount or suspended carbon' sludge. Engine failures because of seizures and breakdown of hearings -had decreased and expense in maintenance had been saved. On the other hand, there was a greater tendency for piston rings to stick.

An oxidation-inhibited oil did not show sufficient advantages to justify its use with buses, but it was successfully employid in certain other.. applications. In one test, H.D. oils showed an increase in engine life of 33 per cent., but this result was not obtained when the test was repeated on a larger scale.
