A FATHER AND SON must wait to learn if their family business will lose its licence. In the meantime Welsh DeputyTraffic Commissioner Fiona Richards has cut the licence held by Liansantffraid-based William Hughes, trading as Hughes Lifting, from three vehicles and one trailer to the one vehicle in possession.

After hearing that William Hughes had retired and the vehicle was being operated by his son David, the DTC pointed out that an 0-licence was personal to the holder and could not be transferred.

Vehicle examiner Philip Harrison reported that last November the firm's only vehicle had been given an immediate S-marked prohibition for brake defects found during its annual test. As a result he carried out a maintenance investigation in January. imposing an immediate prohibition for a defective indicator.

A variation notice had been issued when the vehicle was produced for clearance and the same vehicle had also failed its annual test in 2005.

However, only two of 12 safety inspection records showed defects. Harrison added. Considering the age of the vehicle and the type of work undertaken the inspections, which were carried out by the maintenance contractor, were obviously not of a high enough standard.

The vehicle was parked at the son's house rather than at the operating centre.

David Hughes said they had now transferred their maintenance to the main Scania agent and he no longer parked the vehicle at home. He agreed that some of the defects they had reported had not been rectified, but assured the DTC he would do everything to the best of his ability to ensure that he ran professionally from now on.

Reserving her decision, the DTC said that she had not yet decided if he should be put out of business.
