Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

The TCS and TGX ranges include a contender for the title of Europe's most powerful highway truck. Cohn Barnett reports.

MAN HAS ANNOUNCED two new ranges of heavy trucks to replace the TGA — the TGS and TGX. There is a full description of them on page 62. but the TGX flagship made its first public appearance at the weekend's Le Mans 24 Hour race.

The 680hp, 3,000Nm tractor hauled the communications trailer for M AN's new cousin, race winner Audi. The engine in the Audi tractor is a pre-production unit so cab tilting was out of bounds. but the Liebherr-derived engine features car-like styling at its top end. The 16.2-litre twinturbo SCR V8 drives through a slightly reinforced version of the current overdrive TipMatic box; no manual option will be offered.

The smooth stylingcertainly gives the TGX a striking appearance and the interior improvements make it much less austere than the current TGA range.

• The much-heralded MAN/ Scania merger seems to have quietly slipped into place by virtue of Volkswagen's fuss-free acquisition of dominant interests in both marques, with each being permitted to operate with complete autonomy. Opposition from the SDK grouping of small MAN investors seems to have been headed off since the payment of a significant share dividend.

The future direction of the whole grouping remains unclear, but according to MAN engineering boss Karl Viktor Schaller,component-sourcing synergies won't extend to cabs and engines. However, transmissions are under review, which has already caused some significant resetting of calculators at ZEThe future of VIN"s own tractor, the Constellation, is uncertain — although we understand that a right-hand-drive version is scheduled to he launched in South Africa in August. Schaller believes it could have potential in markets that are less heavily regulated than Western Europe.

However, MAN is about to begin production in Poland of the current TGA range under the WW (World Wide) tag, for sale to markets operating one emissions step behind the Euro emissions zone. The Force project is building even earlier MAN models in India.
