Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

III The Vehicle Inspectorate is to crack down on light goods vehicles with more spot-checks.

This follows the success of Operation Mermaid on 6 June, which covered light CVs and small trailers as well as HGVs.

Co-ordinated by Staffordshire Police, vehicle examiners stopped 1,357 vehicles, of which 184 (14.2%) received immediate prohibitions for mechanical defects and 223 (17.3%) received delayed prohibitions.

Traffic examiners checked 1,055 vehicles, of which 178 were referred for further investigation. Of the 256 lilt vehicles weighed, 48 received overloading prohibitions.

The VI does not have separate figures for prohibitions issued to right goods vehicles and small trailers during Operation Mermaid, but a spokesman says there is sufficient evidence to "focus more than once a year on these vehicles' roadworthiness".
