We would like the Freight Transport Association to take up the fight against the current regulations which allow foreign vehicles on our roads under a separate set of traffic laws than the current British laws.
We understand that if an employee of the ministry pulls two trucks off the road for a roadside inspection and one is British and one is foreign, both with the same fault, the outcome is not always the same. For instance, if both trucks had one in six tyres bald which are not steer tyres, the British lorry would get a delayed prohibition and full annual re-test. The foreign lorry would be free to leave without any penalty.
This then leaves the ministry employee with egg on his face and having to deal with an irate lorry driver who believes he is being victimised.
Surely the laws of the land should be the same for everybody driving in that country since they are supposed to ensure public safety. At the moment it is clear that our roads are not as safe as they could be.
