Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Volvo has recently joined BP and Goodyear in sponsoring International Road Safety Training's driver training package, as sampled last year (CM 24-31 Aug 2000). Prior to our Swedish trip, where the programme was demonstrated to a pan-European audience, we spent a day at North Weald in Essex going through the up-dated course, which covers roll-over awareness and emergency braking techniques, with and without ABS.

Among all the useful knowledge received, the astonishing bit was how suddenly roll-over can happen, and at how low a speed. The latest addition to the course content is the effect of Volvo's new ESP system (see box) on roll-over behaviour.

The training package, devised by BP in 1990 and run by IRST since 1994, has now been received by 10,000 drivers. The IRST training operation is portable, with a classroom and mobile skidpan hauled by two tractors. The artic trainers can operate throughout Europe.
