• The US Greyhound bus company, America's only coast-to-coast bus operator, has been forced into bankruptcy by its three-monthold drivers' strike. It has filed for court protection from its creditors.
Unions unite
• Public transport unions have joined forces to speed up the introduction of light rapid transport systems in up to 40 British cities. The move comes as a result of discussions, set up by the Trades Unions Congress last September in a bid to avoid inter-union conflict over the introduction of 'supertrarn' schemes.
Tougher laws
• Coach tour operators will face tougher consumer protection laws when an EC directive on consumer rights and package holidays becomes law. Measures include stringent rules on compensation and price surcharges.
