• Schmidt has broken into the on-highway clearing sector with the launch of the 7.5 tonne Metropolitan road sweeper range at the 92nd Waste Management Conference and Exhibition in Torbay.

Built in Peterborough, the £60,000 Metropolitan has a Perkins 79kW (106hp) Phaser 1101' diesel with hydrostatic drive, giving it a top speed of 80kmih.

With front-mounted brushes and suction nozzles, it can sweep a 3_4rn wide strip and carries 1,000 litres of water to help fdter and compact up to 3.9 tonnes of sweepings into the skip-shaped hopper. For discharging, the hopper lifts over the rear of the vehicle.

A larger 4.9-tonne hopper and twin wanderhoses are options.

Lacre PDE had its new 30m3 Hercules front-end loader on show, based on a Volvo ELIO chassis. Its front forks are rated at 3.5 tonnes and at 7.5 tonnes unladen. Lacre says it is one of the lightest FEL models on the market. Based on the American Peabody Gallion design, it costs about £49,000 excluding the chassis.

Another specialist to specify a Volvo ELIO chassis is the Swedish refuse tanker manu facturer Disab. It displayed one of its latest mobile vacuum/ pressure tankers mounted on an 8x4 FL10 chassis built for Ailsa Industrial Services of Paisley, Scotland.

It costs about £170,000 including the chassis.

Jack Allen launched a nonHGV 8m3 Cub with twin-bin lift built on a Roadrunner 8.12 chassis for the Stafford borough fleet.

The Cub can hold up to three tonnes of refuse; a tonne less than its 10-tonne GVW stablemate. Using simple hydraulic controls the load compacts via a top-mounted plate and can be tipped or discharged into a larger vehicle using an under-floor scissor lift.

In order to meet the standards demanded by his customers, former sweeper fleet operator Peter J Gander has built his own vehicle.

The Gander Roadjet uses high-pressure water jets to blast road surfaces clean. It is based on an LHD Mercedes 1726 and uses a hydrostatic drive from the auxiliary gearbox with electronic controls.

A 4,500-litre water tank supplies the Woma pump and multi-nozzle rotating heads jetclean the ground at pressures of up to 275 bar.
