Among the Confederation of British Road Passenger Transport's many other little problems is the question of finding a president. Until recently the most likely candidate was LT chairman Sir Richard Way, but his impending departure from LT takes him out of the running.
It seems that one of the seven remaining signatories is almost certain to be elected, and the associations have been asked to make nominations, but the election is likely to prove somewhat tense.
Sir Richard was the only signatory who stood one step back from the immediate politics of the operating industry and indeed sometimes asked his LT deputy, Ralph Bennett, to attend Confederation meetings in his place. It could clearly be difficult to select one PTE director-general over the heads of his fellows; this could lead to NBC chief executive Jim Skyrme being the obvious choice though perhaps some people outside the State sector would have reservations about this.
A knotty situation among many that the Confederation will have to deal with in getting started, I guess.
