PRAISE FOR POSITIVE APPROACH TO ROAD SAhhl'

flr olIowitig rnessage ha hoco rock:Iv3d cv Co/ ftorg :a intcr of 1 :al1s-:-)011-., Mr. Richard \l,rli Road safety concerns us all: pedestrians, niotorists or -drive rs--we are a.i inv()iveti. This is why any effort getirc.ci to ri sko our nigl-ii.Nays safer rneri-ts the thanks of the community as a whole For three years now C017-,n-lercial Motor has ispons(red the Lorry Driver of the Year Competition. What I particularly I:ke about it is its positive approach. The competition has already played a trornendous part in setting standards---in giving the lorry driver a yardstick against which he can assess his own skill. And it is a measure of the success of the competition itself that the Road Transport industry Training Board classify the Lorry Driver of the Year competition as advanced driver training.

I understand that already there are more entries for this year's competition than ever before. This is excellent news. I hope as many lorry drivers as possible will take part, with the full support of their companies, in an effort to improve those driving standards that can be improved arid to maintain those that are already high.

My sincere thanks to Commercial Motor for this very practical contribution towards the hope of us all—better driving standards and greater safety on the roads_
