Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Brian Weatherley can't resist returning to the vexed question of speed cameras — but unlike many comentators he's not whingeing about having to drive within the speed limit.

I !mow, 1 know... I promised never to write another column about speed cameras. And here it is. Anyone who's recently driven down the M4 by Junction 18 near Bath will probably be familiar with the speed cameras set up through the roadworks. The cameras and 40mph speed limit are thereto protect workers engaged in a £10.7m crawler-lane project scheduled for completion next January And guess what? In two months more than 20,000 drivers have been caught exceeding the 40mph limit. Well blow me!

Meanwhile, in a recent newspaper report an ant-speed-camera campaigner was quoted as saying that the M4 speed cameras were "about making money".

Let me tell you a story. Once upon a time I was roadtesting a fully-freighted Daf XF95 40-tanner through one of those long, French motorway tunnels you encounter around the Alps. In the best tradition of British CV journos I was 'pressing on' somewhat; making full use of the truck's impressive performance in a bid to ensure "most favoured status" from Daf's accompanying minder, Leon Dieker (a guy who's driven round the block more than once).

Within the tunnel were a group of construction workers labouring within a coned-off area with a temporary speed limit of 70km/h. I was just creeping up beyond it when Leon gently leaned over and said: "Slow down — how would you like to be working there?" His remark went in one ear and stayed put. So remember: speed cameras in roadworks aren't about making money —they're about saving lives. Try It some time.

Finally, as unlikely as it seems, yours truly has finally sauntered into the 21st Century Yes, I'm now a blogger. So if you fancy commenting on the various postings on my web log click on www.bizbuzzmedia.com/blogs/bigJorry_blog and have your say. I'm looking forward to hearing from you.
