• Claims that a cross-Channel freight ferry's engine room was a fire risk have been supported following a fire on P&O's European Clearway last weekend.
A crew member who tackled the blaze told reporters that European Ferries ignored warnings over a month ago about oil leaking from a bilge pump.
The fire, which broke out as the vessel entered Zeebrugge, was caused by hydraulic fluid spillage and was extinguished "within seconds" by crew members, says P&O. Allegations that P&O had ignored the risk to keep sailing during the busy summer season were rejected as "absolute rubbish".
