To prevent this is the aim of a scheme shown in patent No. 866,315. (Girling, Ltd., Kings Road, Tyseley, Birmingham, 11.) The drawing shows a means of locking the body height when the engine is stopped. It comprises a ratchet-toothed bar (1) connected with the axle assembly and a pair of pawl units (2) attached to the body.

These can be retracted by solenoids (3) and are normally held in this position while the ignition circuit is energized. The bar is then free to oscillate vertically. When the ignition is switched off, the pawls engage the bar and consequently fix the body height.
