SURPLUS OF £101,114 ON MANCHESTER'S BUSES

"THE annual report of Manchester 1 Corporation Transport Department shows that the working expenses of the motorbus fleet worked out at 11.739d. per bus mile. The number of motorbuses owned is 791, of which 155 have petrol engines, the remainder having oil engines. Double-deckers number 658, and there are 133 single-deckers.

In the analysis of working costs, traffic expenses, including superintendents, wages of drivers and conductors, cleaning vehicles, ticket check, etc., are given as 5.601d. per bus mile; geirral expenses, including salaries and wages, rents, rates, printing and stationery, compensation, insurance, etc., 1.065d.; licences, .544d.; repairs and maintenance, including bodies, chassis, tyres, building and fixtures, 2.451d. ; power expenses, 1.727d. :

superannuation fund, .351d. These figures make a total of 11.739d. per bus mile.

The motorbuses, in the year ended March 31, travelled 26,090,062 over 293 route miles. The number of passengers carried was 210,982,344;

average revenue per bus mile, 14.177d.; average bus miles per day, per bus, 107; average fare paid per passenger, 1.75d.; average number of passengers per bus mile, 8.1.

Trolleybuses in use totalled 76, of which 38 are four-wheelers and the remainder six-wheelers. Traffic expenses came out at 6.99d. per vehicle mile; general expenses, 1.522d.; licences, .820d.; repairs and maintenance, 1.595d.; power expenses, 1.538d,; and superannuation fund, .398d., making total working expenses 12.89d.

The trolleybuses travelled 1,866,115 miles and carried 23,708,115 passen gers. The average length of penny stages was 1.442 miles. The average consumption of electricity per vehicle mile was 2.762 units; average vehicle miles per day, per vehicle, 85; average fare paid per passenger, 1.35d.; average number of passengers per vehicle mile, 12.70.

There was a deficit for the year of £94,140 on the trams, whilst there was a surplus of £101,114 on the buses and £5,857 on trolleybus operation.

COLCHESTER'S INCREASED PROFIT.

A PROFIT of £718 for the year as 1—tcompared with £244 for the previous year is reported by Colchester Transport Committee.

REVENUE DOWN AND EXPEND/. TURE UP IN ACCRINGTON.

TO Accrington Town Council last week Alderman Lord said that the gross revenue of the transport department was £77,082 as against £78,468 for the previous year. Gross expenditure was £63,770, compared with £60,219 for the previous twelve months.

The surplus on the year's working e38 was £7,764, and the credit balance, on April 1, 1938, was £21,121. The total credit balance at the end of the year was £28,885. Out of this 12 buses have been purchased, and £3,933 represented provision for depreciation, leaving a net total of expenditure from revenue of £14,657. The credit balance, to carry forward, was £14,228.

MANCHESTER PREPARES RIVER IRWELL PLANS.

I T is understood that plans have been prepared by the city engineer of Manchester for the scheme for the covering over of a portion of the River Irwell for the purposes of a bus station and terminus. It is estimated that the cost of the scheme will be £60,620.

EDINBURGH SHOWS A SURPLUS OF £3,494

A NET surplus of £3,494, on the IA year's working, is reported by Edinburgh Corporation Transport Department. Combined revenue from buses and trams was £1,161,702, as against £1,133,776 for the previous year.

Bus traffic showed an increase of 6,139,589 passengers and £38,185 in revenue, whilst route miles increased by 753,027, After contributing £20,000 to renewals fund, the bus account shows a net surplus of £9,511. The total number of passengers carried on bus and tram routes was 206,279,256, an increase of 4,644,919. There was a reduction in tram traffic to the extent of 1,494,670 passengers and £10,258 in revenue.

WORCESTER'S INCREASED INCOME.

1-1E public traffic committee's 1 abstract of accounts presented to Worcester City Council recently, showed a total income of £8,541 for the year ended March 31 last, as compared with £7,755 for the previous 12

months. Expenditure totalled £365 and £8,175 was carried to the next revenue account.

Mr. R. R. Fairbairn, presenting the report, said that, last year, he was rather fearful that the net revenue from the bus company—the " Midland Red "—was falling and would continue to fall. The substantial increase was very satisfactory.

MIDLAND " RED " WINS STIRK TROPHY.

THE final contest for the Stirk ambulance trophy, which was recently held at Walsall, was won by the Midland " Red" team, with a total of 443 marks out of a possible of 490.
