• Volvo Trucks has announced record UK sales for 1987. Sales in the 7.5tonnes-plus market are up by a third to more than 6,000. The company says much of the success is due to the non-HGV FL4, launched in mid-1987.
• Parcels carrier Parceline has launched a service aimed at businessmen sending important documents or goods. The company phones customers within minutes of a delivery, confirming that it has been made and stating the receiver's name. The scheme, Confirm Call, is available on all Parceline services.
• US-based Rockwell International has bought the off-road axle and transmission business of SOMA Europe Transmissions.
• Franchise parcels carrier Network Overnight has opened its 26th depot, at Barry in South Wales: phone (0446) 740161. The company plans to open five more depots during the next six months.
• The Adam Smith Institute has urged the Government to set up a competitive national postal service to run alongside the Post Office. The Post Office monopoly discourages choice and leads to poor industrial relations, claims the institute.
• Union boss Frank Griffin has reached an agreement with the new driving agency PL Workforce on union membership. Under the agreement Peter Lane Transport, which owns the company, will promote to new recruits the advantage of joining Griffin's United Road Transport Union. PL Workforce was established by Peter Lane Transport to supply temporary qualified drivers and operators to other companies and workplaces. Most drivers in the Peter Lane Group are URTU members.
