Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Ray Smith (Tail Lifts) has developed a hydraulic side lift which operates within the overall dimensions of the trailer body. It has been designed to help hauliers make highfrequency high street drops without causing obstruction.

Hemel Hempstead operator Golden West Foods is using the side-lift (rated at 500kg) on one of its multi-compartment trucks delivering to the fast food chain McDonald's.

The lift gives access to a temperature-controlled forward compartment; another Ray Smith tail-lift gives access at the rear. The side-lift is similar to a third-width tail-lift, attached longitudinally alongside the chassis, with its platform hinged forward from its mounting, just ahead of the nearside front spring hanger.

The 1,200 x 800inm insulated platform is 229mm deep and remains horizontal during operation. When closed it sits flush with the floor. The lift is fitted with a hinged ramp which doubles as a pallet stop; hinged side guards are designed to allow easy access to the lift.

To accommodate the new side-lift, Overlander Trailers has developed a semi-trailer with a nearside chassis rail which is relocated inwards by 300mm. Strength and rigidity comes from full-width 1-beam cross-members placed in front of and behind the lift.

The double-hinged side doors are also reinforced.
