THE CONFEDERATION of British Industry has asked Chancellor of the Exchequer Nigel Lawson to introduce a Budget that will sustain the recovery by helping British firms become more competitive and gain more business at home and abroad.
CBI director-general Sir Terence Beckett said one aid in this task could be the ending of the National Insurance surcharge, which costs business £1bn a year.
He said that another helpful action would be to reduce the £6bn a year rates bill which town and county halls impose on business.
"We also asked the Chancellor to adopt a package which will encourage enterprise and wider share ownership and help the development of today's small firms, some of which will be the giants of industry tomorrow," Sir Terence said.
