THE NEW £4m Garston by-pass on Merseyside, which will improve road communications with Garston Docks and the Freightliner Depot was officially opened on January 16.

Plans for the by-pass, which will take through traffic away from Garston village, were prepared in 1977 but final approval for the scheme only followed a public inquiry in 1981. Work on the road started in September 1982.

The road follows the route of a disused railway track and runs between Horrocks Avenue and the junction of St Mary's Road and Bowden Road.

Councillor Owen Doyle, chairman of Merseyside County Council highways and tunnels committee, said: "The delays over the years in this scheme have been mainly due to processes of public consultation."
