Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

ANNUAL increases in Glasgow City Transport 1-2• fares may be avoided as a result of talks taking place between the department and the state-owned Scottish Bus Group.

The department's deficit last year was 1422,000 and to wipe this out and offset recent increased costs and wages, higher fares were introduced in the autumn. The transport convenor, Cllr. W. L. Lee said that there was no doubt that fares would not rise again before May.

To overcome constant escalation, talks were proceeding with the Group to eliminate competition on overlapping routes and to make them more profitable. It was possible that the Corporation would take over some routes while others inside the city boundaries would be taken over by the Scottish Bus Group.

Cllr. Lee did not anticipate any change in the independent status of the department in the immediate future.
