ASERIOUS drop in passenger traffic has taken place on Belfast Corporation's transport system during the period April l 1948, to January 2. ,1949, as. compared with the similar period in the previous financial year. Mileage, however, increased by more than 500.000. The decrease in passengers carried was approximately 5,250,000.
A summary prepared by Col. R. McCreary, 0.B.E.. general manager. concludes: "While there are, naturally, on every system, fluctuations upwards and downwards at different Periods, the particulars set out Clearly show a persistent continuance Over the nine months of a drop in traffic of such magnitude as to call for the closest cooperation on the part of everyone to meet such conditions."

S1940 he roads department of Kent County Council has been using its 9-ton low-loading vehicle and trailer to carry out haulage contracting . for the Kent Rivers Catchrneat Board and the Kent Agricultural Committee. The South Eastern Licensing Authority has now refused an application by the department to enable this work to be
continued. • Objectors were Messrs. C. and G. Yeoman and other hauliers. who suecessfully, claimed that their facilities were adequate, For the county council it was stated that with its 9-tonner, the roads department gave a service that could not be equalled by outside con tractors.
THE SPOKEN WORD
ANEW device known as the speaking signal will soon be put into use by certain local authorities. The apparatus consists basically of a metal tape recording connected to an amplier and mounted in a box on the normal traffictight standard.
As the lights change from green to amber the synchronized record comes into play, giving advice to pedestrians,
such as Before crossing, look right. look left, look right again: thank you.
The device can be used with a timing regulator When not working in conjunction with traffic lights.
The speaking signal is now being developed for use in the fields of science and industry, and is marketed by Speaking Signals, Ltd., of 10, Copthall Avenue, London, E.C.2.
TOUR PLANS FOR THIS YEAR
THREE eight-day tours of the Wye Valley ale being offered this year by South Midland Motor Services, Ltd., Oxford. The tours are to Tintern, Newnham-on-Severn and Symonds Yat, and of the many bookings already received, some are from overseas.
