Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

MANY operators of bus fleets are taking the view that the demand of the M.O.W.T., that 10 per cent. of their vehicles should run on producer gas, is excessively high. There are many areas, particularly those where there are numerous hills, in which it is most difficult to operate such vehicles satisfactorily and without upsetting existing time schedules. Apart from this, there. is the added trouble ixi .obtaining the additional staff for the extra maintenance involved.

It seems that the main object of the Ministry is for the operators to gain experience with prodticer 'gal, and if they have this already there appears to be little reason for demanding the full percentage. The actual saving of fuel on the actual. number involved is not commensurate with the difficulties experienced.

Despite Mr. F. G. Smith's recent remarks on forcing the employment of the full percentage of vehicles, we believe that there may be some hope of amelioration, of the terms. If this assumption he true, it will be welcomed by the majority of bus operators, a few of whom have laid up those of their vehicles equipped with producers and are endeavouring to carry on their services On the remaining liquid-fuel machines ; even this, according to them, is found to be better than dislocating services.
