Managing director Fleetmaster Operational Support Services Leeds, West Yorkshire "It's been a long time coming," insists driving agency boss Kevin Brooke. "The principle behind it is very good. I just hope operators will take it on board as a positive move.

"I've spoken to a lot of people about it. Some are sceptical but others are taking the attitude that if they have to complete 35 hours' training per driver, they might as well make that training worthwhile." Brooke is adamant that training must be tailored to individual needs and skill levels rather than be a one-size-fits-all solution He also makes a crucial point about the timing of training. In theory, a driver could complete his required 35 hours in 2009, rather than spread it out until 2014. He could then put off his next 35-hour session until 2019, which would mean he only has training once every 10 years, undermining the idea that regular refresher courses will keep drivers on top of the game.
