THE STOBART Group's expansion into the wider logistics market continued last week when it won permission to redevelop the port of Weston in Cheshire.
The 50-acre port is close to Stobart's O'Connor rail hub in Widnes, and the company has been granted a Harbour Revision Order from the Department for Transport (DIT) which will let it develop 37,000m' of warehouses and container-handling facilities. This should make it capable of handling around a million tonnes of freight per year.
Andrew Tinkler,chief executive of the Stobart Group. says: By returning the port of Weston to a fully functioning port we will further enhance our range of costeffective logistics solutions for our customers, while helping to reduce carbon emissions and the amount of freight transported around the country's road network."
The DIT's decision to allow Stobart to develop the port comes after a public enquiry into whether ownership of the port should have been transferred to the group from British Waterways. Stobart Group was formed following an asset swap with Westbury Property Fund last year. Westbury had acquired the port from British Waterways for ElOm in 2006.
