Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• The United Road Transport Union will launch a scheme next week to give truck drivers up to £25,000 compensation if they lose their licences on medical grounds. Premiums will be set by age bands and group discounts will be available.

But URTU general secretary Frank Griffin urges such drivers to get a second opinion. "Our legal experts will advise drivers on whether they should seek further medical opinion," he says. Last month URTU helped a Leeds driver to successfully appeal against losing his licence on eyesight grounds.

The TGWU already offers its members insurance against loss of licence but says it would prefer employers to accept responsibility for drivers who lose their livelihood after a failed medical either through alternative employment or "substantial benefits".
