• Humberside Industrial Cleaning has had its eight-vehicle licence renewed for a year only, following maintenance problems.
North Eastern Deputy LA John Hampton told the company that its organisation was sloppy and that it was now on probation.
One of its vehicles had been issued with an immediate prohibition in September and its condition indicated that no proper preventative maintenance system existed, said Department of Transport examiner Colin Storr. No inspection records were held and there were no systems for drivers to report defects.
Chairman and director Ronald Smith said inspections were attempted every two months, but a self-employed fitter had basically been left to get on with it.
On the licence application form the firm had said it would inspect vehicles monthly; that was its obligation, said Hampton. Smith said the company now had a maintenance contract with a garage.
