Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• )ne of our drivers was reciitly given an on-the-spot tine for taking an artic unit without trailer — weight just over six tonnes — along a road which stated a weight limit of 7.5 tonnes.

Would you please let us know if the police were correct in issuing this fine as obviously it would affect many other operators.

K J Beeston Managing Director Kenneth Beeston Farms Sudbury Editor's reply: The police probably were correct because it is likely that this weight limit was indicated by one of the type of traffic signs which were introduced in 1981, which generally have a lorry symbol inside a roundel, and which relate to maximum (plated) vehicle weight, and not actual running weight. Signs without a lony symbol and simply with a weight figure such as 20t inside a roundel do still refer to actual running weight.
