renew and improve the M1 between junction 9 (A5 Friars Wash) and junction 10 (Luton Airport) will last from February 16 for about six months. Roads and Traffic Minister Peter Bottornley says: "This stretch was part of the original Ml. It opened in 1959.
"It was designed to carry 50,000 vehicles a day, 25% of them heavy lorries. It is now carrying 113,000 vehicles each day, 39% of them heavier vehicles than its designers intended.
Three lanes will be kept open for peak traffic flow. Off-peak, only two lanes will be open each way. Occasionally, at dead of night there will be only one lane each way."
