• The Road Traffic (Carriage of Dangerous Substances in Packages, etc) Regulations 1986 came into effect on April 6, 1987, and operators will have until April 6, 1988 to ensure that they are in compliance with regulation seven which covers driver training on the hazards of products carried, the action to be taken in an emergency and his duties under these regulations.
The training division of Batley, West Yorkshire-based Liquids Powders Si. Gas Transport runs CIA-approved Ilazdfreight courses and now offers approved Hazpack courses designed to assist operators in meeting the requirements of the new regs.
The next courses to be held at Batley will be on April 23-4, May 11-12, May 26-27. LP&G (0924 478235) can also provide training anywhere in mainland Britain.
NEW FLEET DEAL
• Octagon Recovery Service, bought by the RAC last October, is launching a new 'pay-on-use' commercial vehicle recovery service aimed primarily at fleet operators.
The new repayment service is an extension of the RAC's Fleetcontrol service. Commercial vehicle fleet operators need only to register their fleet with Octagon, for 21.50 per vehicle per year (minimum 220), but no more money is due unless a call is made for roadside assistance.
Under the scheme, fleet operators can specify what services should be made available to which vehicles. For example, a fleet operator can specify that all RAC services should be available for the chairman's Rolls Royce, but limit his lorry fleet to roadside assistance.
The RAC claims the new service could save operators of well-maintained fleets thousands of pounds a year, since it enables companies to pay only for actual breakdowns. Every month a report is sent to the fleet operator detailing his fleet breakdowns during the month.
IFT GOES FOR NB
• lveco Ford has appointed National Breakdown to cover all its new commercial vehicles against accident and breakdown.
Under the new deal all 16,000 Iveco Ford vehicles sold this year will be automatically covered for 12 months by National Breakdown to a rescue credit limit of 2250.
Stranded drivers will use a free 24-hour Aidline telephone service to call National Breakdown's commercial recovery control centre, which will organise roadside assistance or recovery through its network of specialist garage agents and Iveco Ford dealers.
Even when the initial 12month cover has expired, drivers will be able to use the service, but the operator will be charged for it. National Breakdown is available on (0532) 557416.
