HIRTY-THREE centres are holding CM Lorry Driver of the Year DU nds this year, the first two being held on May 10 at Cumbria and 'orbay. The Finals will take place at Cranfield airfield, Bedfordshire, n September 20.

The entrance fee for each ompetitor in the rounds is beig held for 1981 at £10. But any ompany entering ten or more rivers will be allowed one en-ant free by application to the ,ational organising secretary fter the last regional round durlg July. Meanwhile, the entry 9e to the Finals doubles to £20. Substantial revision of the [ational regulations what lational secretary John Wells efers to as a tidying-up exercise has been made for this year. 01 drivers must hold a Group A

driving licence as well as hgv, and they must have had no new endorsement during the previous 12 months. All vehicles, instead of just being in regular load-carrying use, must now conform to C and U Regs covering load-carrying vehicles.

While fire engines have been allowed in for a number of years, competitors are also now allowed to drive ambulances. The regulations now say that coaches and buses primarily constructed for seated passengers are excluded — so omitting welfare "ambulances". No differentiation by body class is now being made in any class, and instead will be entirely a matter of dimensions.

In the interests of fair competition, the use of mirrors enabling front wheels to be seen and optic wide-angle mirrors on the offside is banned. If fitted, these mirrors must be blocked out during competiton driving.

Similarly, hgv fitted with a lifting axle must have it in the down position during competition. Classes D and H may be affected if the use of underrun bumpers adding around half a metre to legal length is legalised between now and competition dates.

Copies of the LOoY's revised regulations are now available on application to the national secretary at Quadrant House (Tel: (01) 661 3500, extensions 3659 and 3660).

Virtually every class has a small alteration in dimension length, but the major change is in the articulated classes where there is now no differentiation by body type, classes being divided by length only.
