UNABLE to reach agreement with Ribble Motor Services, Ltd., over alleged anomalies in fares and stages in Carlisle. the city council decided last week to put the matter before the Northern Traffic Commissioners. This followed a meeting between Carlisle Transport Committee, Mr. J. P. Senior,,Ribble's assistant general manager, and Mr. A. Farish, Caflisle area superintendent for the cornpany.
The committee suggested modifications to existing stages, and proposed intermediate stages for city services. Mr. Senior replied that he did not think the company would agree to the alterations.
Mr. W. J. Hunter, chairman of the committee, told the council last week that Ribble had refused Ito meet them further on the matter.

1 NSTEAD of periodically filling vehicles' fuel tanks to capacity, Hornsey Borough Council have for a year been sending out their refuse collectors each day with just sufficient fuel to last their rounds. As a result they have saved £277 in fuel bills. a 134-per-cent. drop from the previous year's figure.
Mr. G. A. Pentecost, borough engineer. stating that the system is to be extended, has said that it acts on the theory "that when you have plenty of money in your pocket you are inclined to spend it less carefully."

TWO new types of power take-off drive
for Comet oilers have been introduced by Leyland Motors, Ltd. They can be fitted to fiveor six-speed gearboxes and can transmit 50 b.h.p.
The low-speed drive has a ratio of 0.612 to 1 and develops 2,840 lb.-in. at 1,100 shaft r.p.m. The high-speed unit has a ratio of 0.993 to 1 and develops 1,750 lb.-in, at 1.800 shaft r.p.m.
