SOME 40,000 drivers across five continents are expected to take part in a new competition

organised by Scania to find the best young truck driver in the world. The competition is intended to raise awareness of professional training in safe and economical driving and raise standards in the transport sector.

Scania dealerships and test tracks around the world will host the qualifying rounds from 2007. These will consist of theoretical and practical tests in line with the European Union directive on compulsory driver training.

Cecilia EdstrOm, from Scania, says: "Road safety is primarily a matter of human behaviour. By means of these competitions. we want to help attract more young, capable drivers into the transport business."

This is the third time the competition has been held. In 2005 it attracted a record number of entrants when 30,000 contestants took part from countries including Argentina, Brazil, Taiwan and South Africa. Next year's competition will include entrants from Australia, South Korea, Malaysia, Botswana, Namibia and Tanzania.

Scania will also organise road safety seminars in partnership with the World Health Organisation (WHO).
