• Lorry drivers should not suffer long-term health damage as a result of inhaling diesel fumes, says Health Minister Roger Freeman.
He has rejected a call from Liberal Democrat NIP Malcolm Bruce for research into the health implications of emissions from diesel-powered vehicles.
But Freeman said that his department is evaluating a series of studies relating to the effects on health of diesel exhausts "in order to assess any possible impact on the public".
Direct exposure to diesel ex haust fumes can cause irritatioi to the eyes and throat, he admitted, and substances present in diesel fumes are known to be toxic to laboratory animals in high concentrations.
