• The Freight Transport Association has condemned the EC for excluding own-account hauliers from holding cabotage permits. "It's crazy that people carrying their own goods should be restricted while people carrying other people's goods are not." says David Green, FTA international and customs procedure manager.
Although the FTA supports cabotage as an interim measure, it is urging the Department of Transport to define the practical details involved. Problems which "have not been properly addressed", says Green, include VAT payment, conditions of carriage in a cabotage country, insurance, and the fair allocation of permits.
