• In aweA Hi which the Monopolies and Mergers Commission presents its report on the fuel retailing industry to the Department of Trade and Industry, attacks have been launched on continuing rises in the price of bulk diesel fuel.
Both the Freight Transport Association and the Road Haulage Association have slammed price hikes of nearly 20% during 1989.
The ETA points to three recent increases, boosting average price to the haulier to 30.3p per litre. "We are looking for a reduction of 0.5p per litre." it says.
Sydney Balgamie of the RHA says he has asked the oil companies for an explanation of the price rises.
The oil companies blame the price hikes on high demand created by the cold weather. In winter, quality requirements go up and we have to produce fuel capable of surviving lower temperatures," says Esso which, with 19%. has the largest 11K market share.
