Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Independent operator Alan Palmer of Carlisle is the latest Cumbrian operator to sell out to the Stagecoach Group, with the transfer of eight buses and a few country routes to Carlisle-based Cumberland Motor Services.

Palmer, who was once involved in the Blair and Palmer coach company, set up the present operation when B&P closed down. His brother George runs a small company from adjoining premises and will continue to run contract work out of the new premises.

Competitive services were once run in Carlisle, but recent activity centred on the route to Gretna Green and Longtown.

Cumberland is unlikely to retain the Fords and Bedfords that were acquired and its buses are now involved on routes that take them into Scotland.

0 Another south coast operator Hastings & District Transport has been snapped up by Stagecoach Holdings, which now operates buses on the south coast from Southampton to Hastings.

Former National Bus Company subsidiary Hastings & District which runs 98 vehicles, will operate as part of the Southdown company.
