THE PAYLOAD potential of Mercedes-Benz' rear-steer 38tonne tractive unit has been improved by half a tonne.
The latest 205kW (2764) engined 6 x 2 chassis, designated 2028S, weighs just 7.4 tonnes in standard trim, only 75kg more than the less powerful 184kW (247hp) 2025S model.
Chassis frame design on the 2028S is essentially identical to that of Mercedes* top-ofthe-range turbo charged 2033S tractive unit.
With an outer wheelbase of 3.8m it qualifies for plating at 27.36 tonnes according to Construction and Use regulations, and caters for king pin loadings of up to 15 tonnes.
Suspension layout also follows the 2033S, with conventional parabolic leaf springs on both drive and steering ax Optimum fore-and-aft weight distribution is assured, by a special load sensing valve regulating the pressure in the air suspension of the second steered axle, for traction and directional control, within plated axle weights.
In poor ground conditions, centre axle suspension air pressure can be "dumped'. using a small switch in the
cab, momentarily imposing more weight on the drive axle for greater traction.
The Mercedes II L7 huh-reduction axle can be specified with an optional differential lock for off-road conditions.
The ZF Ecosplit 16-speed synchromesh range-change gearbox with integral splitter is carried through to the new model but a "faster" 4:1 axle ratio is adopted as standard to reduce fuel consumption.
hi top gear, an engine speed of 1,950 relates to 96k Rah (6( /mph).
