• Drivers working for Camborne-based haulier Robert Barnard face an uncertain future as South Crofty, Cornwall's last working tin mine, reaches a crisis point.
Barnard's tippers have worked the South Crofty contract for three and a half years, transporting tin ore to the processing plant at nearby Wheal Jane.
Of the seven vehicles Barnard operates, four are dedicated solely to the troubled tin mine. And while the mine has been
busy lately, it is struggling to get a decent price for its tin, and faces closure unless a "white knight" financier steps in.
"Three drivers would ,41.have to go if the mine closes," says Barnard. "But I've kept other local work and long-distance bulk work going just in case." Barnard also regularly joins forces with neighbouring haulier Sid Knowles for top-up work.
