DETROIT Diesel Allison UK proposes to phase out production at Peterhead by November 1982 and at Wellingborough by March 1983 because of the serious decline in demand for heavy-duty transmissions and diesel engines.
Over 500 employees at the two locations will be offered early retirement where applicable, or separation terms.
Manager Fred Best said: "Despite the proposals affecting Peterhead and Wellingborough, General Motor's commitment to maintain a strong presence in the UK component industry is demonstrated by the new £2m Hendon plant and the £5m investment at Dunstable."
