HOW a major fire and explosion last year at the premises of A. F. Hampson Ltd., of Salford, resulted in that company taking up the business of warehousing was recounted before the North Western deputy Licensing Authority, Mr. A. H. Joliffe, on Tuesday, when an application for four vehicles of 131 tons on B licence was granted.
Mr. B. Winterbottom, director, said that Hampson manufactured glass bottles and, after the fire and kiln explosion last year, a very substantial expenditure would have been required to put the plant back in working order. It was decided, he said, to develop the merchanting of glass bottles and, as large premises were available, facilities were then offered for storage and breaking bulk. There was no intention of going into general transport, but their own vehicles were needed as when hauliers were employed difficulties were liable to arise.with damage and delays.
Mr. W. T. Skelly, of Baxter, Hoare and Co. Ltd., forwarding agents, said that when use was made of haulage undertakings, difficulty had been experienced in persuading them to keep the vehicles waiting at the docks.
