DAMAGES of £3,125 must be paid by Scottish Omnibuses Ltd., of Edinburgh, to Mrs. Winifred Wingrove, of Broxburn, in an action raised on behalf of her husband claiming £20,000 damages. Mrs. Wingrove alleged injuries sustained by her husband when he fell from the platform of a moving bus between Edinburgh and Glasgow in July, 1961. After severe head injuries he became mentally weak and incapable of working. The bus company was blamed for failing to provide reasonably adequate hand support on the bus platform.

Scottish OmnibuseS denied liability and blamed Wingrove for failure to take reasonable care of his own safety. It was contended that some years previously the man had lost the fingers of his right hand and that this was the cause of the accident. Lord Fraser, in the Court of Session, ruled that both parties were to blame for the accident. The failure to grasp the handrail provided indicated that Wingrove had not taken reasonable care. The vertical handrail of the bus was in an awkward position for a passenger about to alight, Lord Fraser said and the defendants were negligent in not providing a central vertical pillar in the doorway. Such a pillar would probably have averted the accident.

The judge assessed total damages at £12,500 and assessed the appellant's responsibility at 75 per cent and the defendant's at 25 per cent.

No Bar on Foreign Workers: Central S.M.T. of Scotland has refused to operate any type of bar against foreign workers. The T.G.W.U. has been advised that there must be full freedom from discrimination in the recruitment of workers. The Union is to report this view to the workers at Old Kilpatrick. where a strike took place recently over the recruitment of coloured workers.

Higher Glasgow fares?: Glasgow Corporation transport committee has warned that further increases on bus, trolley bus and • underground fares may be necessary, An application has been lodged on behalf of the city's 6,000 traffic staff for a substantial wage increase. This could force a further rise in fares, which went up only two weeks ago. Estimated loss for 1964-65 is £551,000. The recent fare increases will contribute £440.000. leaving a deficit of £111,000. Expenditure for the coming year is estimated at £10.5 m., with revenu& E9-9 m.

Lettered Bus Stops at King's Cross: London Transport this week introduced a scheme of lettered bus stops at King's Cross, similar to the scherne introduced at Marble Arch in one.

THE first single-decker buses to be 1. introduced by Oldham Corporation Passenger Transport since 1950, and first iinderfloor-engined buses ever to be operated by the department, are now entering service. Basis of the vehicles are Leyland Tiger Cub PUSC.1/13 chassis with air brakes, pneumocyclic gearboxes and lock-up clutches, whilst Marshall of Cambridge (Engineering) Ltd. has built the 41-seat bodies.

Interior trim of the new bodies is to Oldham's new standard, and includes the extensive use of Warerite, Vybak and colour-impregnated glass fibre. Accles and Pollock Dapta seats with stainless steel double top-rails are fitted with Vitafoam cushions and Dunlopillo polyether squab fillings, and trimmed with Firth's moquette and Wardle's Everflex. Heating is provided by two Smith's fresh air heaters, and ventilation is by six Auster double deflector ventilators and two Weathershields Lokvent roof ventilators. Fluorescent interior lighting is employed, with Phillips control gear and B.M.A.C. fittings, whilst the destination and route number unit is to the new Oldham standard, supplied by, Transport Engineering and Equipment Ltd.

Duple Show Exhibits

A TOTAL of 11 buses and coaches will Z-1he exhibited by the Duple group at the Commercial Motor Show this year, and a further 11 vehicles with bodies by the group will be available in the demon

stration park. .

On Duple's own stand will be three composite coach bodies, comprising two 49/52-seaters. one each On a Bedford VAL and Thames 36 chassis, and a 37/41-seater on a Bedford 5B5. This latter vehicle will be equipped with 37 observation-type seats. Duple (Northern) Ltd, will also show three coaches, including a 37/41-seat Firefly body on a Thames 30 chassis, and a 42/51-seat Continental body on an A.E.C. Reliance 590 chassis. The Reliance will have 42 Chapman fully adjustable reclining seats. The third eoach will be on a new rearengined single-deck chassis, Duple (Midland) Ltd will show three service buses, two on Bedford chassis, and one on a Thames 30 chassis. One of the Bedfords will be a 21-seater on a modified J2,SZ.10 chassis, and the other a 42-seater on the SB.5. Willowbrook Ltd. will exhibit a 47-seat, dual-purpose coach on a Leyland Leopard 11-m. chassis, the vehicle being in the colours of the Yorkshire Traction Co. Ltd. A 76-seat, double-deck Atlantean for Coventry Corporation will also be shown.
