ABOUT 140 tipping vehicles are expected to he at the disposal of the newly formed West Cumberland Tipping Vehicle Operators' Association. More than 20 operators attended a meeting last Saturday to settle final details of the organization. Because of the imminent extension of the M6 motorway from the Lancaster by-pass to Carlisle it was decided that the time was ripe for joint action.

Mr. Harry Pickthall, of J. and, A. Pickthall Ltd.., Cleater Moor, presided and a sub-committee of six members is to go ahead with the final details. Another group, the former Lakeland Transport Services, was in operation in this area during and after the last war, hut was wound up with nationalization. Earlier this year there were plans locally to form a limited company, but they were displaced by the choice of a group which it was felt would encourage mutual trust between operators and form a basic rate structure. • Last month there was a meeting at Troutbeck, near Windermere, attended by representatives from the Carlisle, Kendall, BarroW-in-Furness and West Cumberland sub-areas, at which Mr. Pickthall called for the formation of similar groups to deal with the extra constructional traffic when it came.

Smoke Success

OLLOWING the introduction of its self-help black smoke scheme for businessmen to report to the owners of commercial vehicles seen to be emitting black smoke on the roads, the --T.R.T.A. reports that there has been a regular and steady demand for supplies of postcards and that the _recipients of these cards—both members and nonmembers—have reacted favourably to being notified of smoking vehicles. of Willesden, North London, to he known as the Fuller RT-915, is to be shown at Earls Court. This is one of the new twin countershaft family manufactured by the Fuller Transmission Division of Eaton Manufacturing Co, The unit has a torque capacity of 900 lb. ft., with 15 forward speeds, and is available with overdrive.

Also to be shown is a version of the 475, 5-speed gearbox now offered with synchromesh, which can also be provided with a full-power take-off, an important factor in these days of ever increasing auxiliary equipment. This gearbox has a maximum torque capacity of 275 lb. ft. A third. box shown will be a unit capable of handling input torque of up to 3751h. ft, and available in both synchromesh and constantmesh. This unit is also supplied with a full power take-off.

A number of other items will be on show and these will include differential units of various sizes and types, and an overhead cab air conditioner, primarily for use with export vehicles,
