riA NEW £100,000 regional outside broadcast base was opened at Bristol this week by the B.B.C.., West Region. after a major building operation extending over nearly two years. The building houses 40 television and sound outside broadcast vehicles which, since 1952, were accommodated in a hangar on what hsed to be the City Airport at Whitchurch, Bristol.

The 12,000 sq. ft. of space for the fleet which the region uses in its day-to-day sound and television work is entirely selfcontained. Offices and workshops are Situated at the sides of the building with a spacious 45-car car park underneath them.

A 2,000 sq. ft. test room and workshop area is available for .a range of electronic requirements, and 2,250 sq. ft. is desig

nated for maintenance purposes. The whole site is heated by electric underfloor heating.

Transport maintenance facilities include a vehicle hoist and related oil store, workshops and offices.

Large, power-operated doors provide access from 'Belgrave Road and an exit to Tyndall's Park Road, Clifton. A small office, acoustically treated, has been provided for quality checking purposes when recorded material has been brought in by a mobile recording unit. The mechanical workshop, equipped with power tools, has facilities for welding and a clean area where precision jobs may be carried out.

One half of the floor area has been constructed to stand a weight of 10 tons, while the other half will cope with eight tons.
