I-1. A LORRY which overturned its load

of coal at a traffic island was found to have mechanical defects, it was said at Nottingham Summons Court last week. So another lorry was called up to take the load away. But that, too, had defects, said Mr. T. R. B. Tiernay, prosecuting the owners.

Owners of the first lorry, Bulk Transport. of Thurmaston, Leicestershire, were fined £25 after admitting using a vehicle of which the offside and nearside front springs and connecting bolts between the low platform and the chassis were in such a condition that danger was likely to he caused.

The other firm. Murphy Bros., also of Thurmaston, and the lorry driver, Dennis Buck, of Riddings, Derbyshire, pleaded guilty to using a motor vehicle of which the front spring hanger was insecure to the chassis, and the rear end of the front steering draglink and the offside front A26 track rod end were in such a condition that danger was likely to be caused. The firm was fined £10 with £3 3s. costs and Buck was fined £2 and had his licence endorsed.

Bulk Transport also pleaded guilty to failing to affix a valid identity certificate of a carrier's licence and to employing Charles W. Musgrove to drive a motor lorry without a driving licence, They were fined £2 for each offence and ordered to pay £.5 5s. costs.

Mr. H. Clegg, for all the defendants, said the incident had been "a real shock to Bulk Transport, but these defects have been and are being put right ". He said Musgrove had shown the firm a driving licence when he applied for the job, but it belonged to his brother.

Murphy Bros. maintenanced their lorries every Saturday morning, said Mr. Clegg, and Buck was "very careful about his lorry ".
