Exchanging Ions

pLANTS by means of which water for topping-up batteries can be produced at a cost less than that of ordinary commercially distilled water are being offered by the Permutit Co., Ltd., Gunnersbury Avenue. London, W.4. Known as Deminrolit plants, they employ an ion-exchange process for demineralizing ordinary tap water. Exhausted materials can easily be regenerated without removing them from the plant, and only small amounts of inexpensive chemicals are required.

The amount of water which can be produced between regeneration procedures may vary according to the district, but for a Mark 5 plant processing Metropolitan Water Board mains water the quantity would be about 50 gal. Cost of the chemicals for regeneration is about 2s.

The Mark 5 plant has an output flow i.ate of approximately 6 g.p.h. There is also a larger model, the Mark 4, which can process 11 g.p.h. and is mounted on wheels.

Pumping Liquids SUITABLE for discharging lowviscosity non-corrosive liquids such as milk and paraffin, a modified version of the Alcon 113-in. pump has been produced by Arthur Lyon and Co. (Engineers), Ltd., 6 Carlos Place, Grosvenor Square, London, W.I. When powered by an engine of the J.A.P. or Villiers type, the capacity is 4.800 g.p.h. The unit weighs 57 lb. and costs £36 10s.

Versions with a capacity of 4,600 g.p.h. but incorporating American Briggs and Stratton or Clinton engines are £31 10s. and £28 10s. respectively.

Creep Cheaply ACREEPER mounted on a tubular steel frame and reasonably priced at £3 5s. retail is being made by Thos, Me!drum, Ltd., John Street, Sheffield, 2. At the foot are steel rollers whilst at the head are ball bearing swivel castors. The platform measures 3 ft. 6 in. long and 1 ft. 3 in. wide.

To be used in conjunction with the Meleo commercial-vehicle axle stand, extension pieces varying in range from 1 ft. to 6 ft. l in. are also being sold by the company. They are tested at up to 12 tons and sell at prices ranging up to £5 15s. 9d.

Steam Clean rtA RANGE of steam cleaners made by P. M. Andersen (Australia), Pty., Ltd., Sydney, New South Wales, is now being offered in this country by Messrs. W. R. Rudd, 76 Kedleston Road, Derby. The largest model is the TCR-3, which is a multi-gun type. The M100-B has a delivery rate of cleaning solution of

132.4 100 g.p.h. with a fuel consumption of 1,9 g.p.h. Controls of all the models arc automatic.

Sticky Foam PRODUCED in various thicknesses and in widths of from in.1 ft. 6f in., Tesamoll is a urethane-foam material with an adhesive backing. This is covered by a p.v.c. material which can be stripped off before application. The makers are Sealdraught, Ltd., Chandos House, Buckingham Gate, London, S.W.!. A special heat-resisting variety is obtainable for sealing where comparatively high air temperatures are to be expected.

Slim Spanners A RANGE of slim double open-ended spanners produced in chrome vanadium steel and chromium plated, is being marketed by Abingdon King Dick, Ltd., Kings Road, Birmingham, II. These spanners arc available individually or in kits of seven costing £1 19s. 6d. The Whitworth kit has sizes from 1-726in. and the Unified a-I in.

Loading Aid rAA PORTABLE fork-lift truck by means of which vehicles may be loaded or unloaded by one man has been produced by W. Langley and Co. (Mechanical Handling), Ltd., Magdalen Street, London, S.E.1. It is known as the JU and weighs only 70 .1b.. Its capacity is 200 lb. The height of lift is 3 ft. 3 in. and the forks are 1 ft. 6 in. long with a space between them of the• same distance. It is envisaged that a JU may be carried on vehicles used to deliver such goods as refrigerators.

Lamp Range DESIGNED around the Mazda Bi-Pin 5-ft. fluorescent lamp, the Series 2 Family is a range of industrial lighting fittings produced by the A.E.I. Lamp and Lighting Co., Ltd., Melton Road, Leicester.

The gear channel is pressed from heavy steel sheet stiffened at each end by diecast aluminium plates. New control gear is employed, including a starter switch said lo be about half the normal size..

Units in the tante are cheaper than comparable models previously offered. The industrial single lamp, fitted with control gear, costs £8 14s. 5d.

Window Tray A N accessory which may be appre

ciated by drivers is a plastics tray which is clipped to a detachable bracket inserted in the door window recess. The tray has a small area to serve as a plate, and a "saucer" into which fits a cup, supplied with the set. The makers are Tudor Accessories, Ltd., Beaconsfield Road, Hayes, Middx.
