Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

ANOTHER important aspect of the problem of sugar-beet haulage rates arose at a Cambridge meeting Of interested parties last week, when Sir Ilaviland Hiley, Regional Transport Commissioner for the Eastern Area,

presided. The discussion in general was similar to that at Nottingham on the previous day, as reported by S.T.R. on pages 52 and 53 of this issue.

Sir Haviland said he was strongly in favour of some general agreement as to the rates to be paid for the haulage of sugar beet. Presumably he had in mind the suggestion made by Mr. Sabatini, of the N.,F.U., and discussed with S.T.R. at Nottingham, to the effect that the N.F.U. would be prepared to consider favourably the application of a Nation-wide scale of rates for this traffic. Sir Haviland's problem, he said, was that he was responsible for the provision of transport for this sugar beet, and he was, therefore, likely to be called upon to assist the farmer to find road transport. This was particularly so at present, because there were so many farmers growing sugar-beet for the first time, who would, naturally, be unacquainted with hauliers engaged in that traffic. It would simplify matters for him if rates were standardized, as then there would be no risk of. quibbling by either party.

Incidentally, we understand Abet steps have already been taken by all parties concerned to inaugurate discussions between the N.F.U. and roadtransport interests, with a view to standardizing rates for the haulage of sugar-beet.
