AT its meeting on Tuesday of last week (August 11), the Road Haulage Central Wages Board, under the chairmanship of Sir Francis Floud, K.C.B., K.C.S.I., K.C.M.G., decided to give notice of its intention to submit to the Minister of Labour and National Service proposals for the amendment of the existing Road Haulage Wages ,Order governing the statutory remuneration of road haulage workers.

It is proposed that the statutory remuneration for adult workers in the London Area, in Grade 1 areas, and on long-distance services, shall be increased by 2s. 6d. per week, in Grade 2 areas by 3s, per week, in Grade 3 areas by 3s. 6d. per week, and that increases of half those amounts shall apply in the case of junior workers to whom the achilt rates do not apply. It is also proposed that the basic subsistence allowance of 7s. shall be increased, to 9s., and that certain towns shall be up-graded for wages purposes.

The full proposals of the Board will, in due course, be transmitted to the Area Wages Boards for report and 01 all employers in the industry, and a period of 21 days will be allowed for the receipt of objections to the proposals. The reports of the Area Boards and any objections lodged will be considered by the Central Board at a further meeting at which the question of submitting the proposals to the Minister of Labour and National Service for confirmation will also be considered.

The employers expressed considerable concern at the present situation due, among other reasons, to the traryfer of traffic from road to rail. It was agreed that the position should be further examined with a view to such action being taken as may be necessary,
