Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE desirability of levying members of the A.R.O. Mid-Cornwall Subarea in order to raise a fund to defray costs of objecting to certain licence applications was discussed at a general meeting last week.

Mr. J. T. Johns (St. Austell) proposed that all members should be asked to contribute to the fund, according to the size of their fleets. Mr. Charles Hodgson (St. Austell) suggested 5s. as the maximum levy per vehicle. Mr. Johns's proposal, coupled with Mr. Hodgson's suggestion, was accepted.

It was decided to defer the signing of the agreement on sand-haulage rates, drawn up by the North Cornwall district. The rates commence at Is. 9d. per ton per mile, increasing by 3d. for eeery succeeding ton-mile. The support of the North Cornwall hauliers, who are principally affected, is being awaited.

Details of the work carried out by the Plymouth Area office were given to the meeting, and showed that it was already assisting scores of operators and well justified its existence. ' The question of the use by farmers of trailers behind private cars was re

ferred to, and the chairman, Mr. W. R. G. Hawke, asked any member who knew of a farmer carrying goods for hire or reward in such a trailer immediately to bring the matter to the notice of the Association's officers.

This question was also raised at a meeting of the committee cif the Devon and Cornwall Area, earlier last week. At that meeting, Mr. R. W. Sewill, A.R.O. national director, said that, if definite proof could be produced of a person using a trailer for hire or reward, he would see that the matter was thoroughly investigated, in conjunction with the National Farmers' Union.

-The latter meeting (presided over by Mr. K. G. Foster) also decided to support the proposition of Lt.-Comm. A. Fallon (Penzance) that, as an inducement to members to pay their subscriptions promptly, headquarters be asked to consider a 2i-per-cent. reduction on all subscriptions that are paid within a month of the date on which they become due. • • A special vote of thanks was passed to Mr. Sewill, expressing the strongest conviction of the value " of his work for the Association.
