Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE BOSS OF Wigan-based operator Isherwood Skip and Container Hire has received a suspended prison sentence after his company was found guilty of illegally depositing and burning waste.

Director Nigel Isherwood was given a 26-week prison sentence, suspended for two years, for breaches of the Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) Regulations 2007 when he appeared before Liverpool Crown Court.

A joint investigation by the Environment Agency (EA) and Wigan Metropolitan Borough Council found that the firm had illegally deposited large quantities of soil and demolition waste, totalling 2,503m3, on council-owned land.

On two occasions the firm, at the direction of Isherwood, also illegally burnt large volumes of waste on site in order to avoid disposal costs.

Isherwood Skip and Container Hire, which has an O-licence for 12 vehicles and two trailers, saved itself more than £18,000 as a result of the illegal activity.

The company was fined £20,000, ordered to pay £18,000 costs, and told to remove the illegally deposited waste by 14 July.

Paul Shelton, EA officer, says: “This was a deliberate attempt to avoid disposal costs, creating an unfair competitive advantage over legitimate local businesses.” No one at Isherwood Skip and Container Hire was available for comment as CM went to press.
