Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

We drove the fully-laden hybrid around the hilly streets of Stuttgart: an ideal challenge. And with 215hp of diesel power supported by another 59hp from the electrics when needed, performance at a full 12-tonne GVW will leave no driver frustrated. The battery holds just enough power to handle all the uphill stretches encountered, ready to be regenerated on the downhill bits. Regeneration occurs in three ways, on the over-run, under normal foot braking and when the powerful two-stage retarder mode is used.

Hybrid trucks may not yet be financially competitive, and initial sales are going to be from operators looking to improve their “green” credentials, but as the price of diesel inevitably goes in one direction, and the cost of the hybrid’s components falls, the payback time given by a 15% fuel saving will eventually shorten to a realistic level.
