SEAFRANCE IS TO claim compensation from the Port of Calais for lost productivity in excess of Om following the closure of several ferry berths earlier this year.

Spokesman Adrian Richardson says:"Only three berths are operational at present and the port has told us that we won't have four berths until the middle of July. Then we can take stock and calculate how much compensation we are going to seek. Our Om estimate will no doubt increase."

Problems at the port began when the bottom deck of Berth Seven broke as two trucks came off it in February. Another berth is closed for repairs until mid-May. "Even when that opens the three berths we are using will have to be closed one at a time for maintenance," adds Richardson.

P&O is also considering seeking compensation. A spokesperson says: "We can't do our final sums until the berths are fixed but we will be putting in a claim." Peter Cullum, head of the RHA's international department. has spoken to "four or five operators keen to take legal action".
